New in Copenhagen? Your flat probably has no ceiling lights
It surprises many people who move here: Danish apartments, rentals included, usually come without light fittings. In each room there’s just a ceiling outlet (a lampeudtag) with a few wires or a small socket, and you’re expected to bring your own lamps. So the first evenings in a new home are often spent in the dark or by phone light.
We can fit all the lamps in one visit. We bring a ladder and tools, and it rarely takes long per lamp.
We hang your lamps
Fitting a lamp is usually quick. Most of the time goes on deciding where it should hang. How high above the dining table? Does the cable need to run across the ceiling because the outlet isn’t above the table? We work that out with you, and then the fitting goes fast.
What we can do, and what needs an electrician
We connect lamps to an existing ceiling outlet. If new wiring is needed, an outlet has to be moved or new sockets have to go in, Danish rules require an authorised electrician. We’ll tell you honestly if your job needs one.
How to fit a lamp to a Danish ceiling outlet yourself
Want to do it yourself? Here’s a short guide. If you’re the least bit unsure, don’t – give us a call instead.
- Switch off the power at the fuse box (eltavle). Check that the light in the room is off.
- Strip the cable: Remove about 5 cm of the outer sheath and about 7–8 mm from each inner wire. Take care not to cut into the copper strands.
- Twist the strands lightly so they don’t splay.
- Take the cover off the ceiling outlet and thread the lamp cable through it.
- Clamp the cable in the strain relief, so the lamp hangs from that and not from the copper wires.
- Connect: blue to N and brown to M1, the live wire controlled by the switch. Don’t use L – it’s live all the time. Yellow/green goes to earth if the lamp has one.
- Test by switching the power and the wall switch back on. If the lamp works, put the cover back on.
Henrik’s tip: Over a dining table, a lamp usually hangs 60–70 cm above the table top. Sit down at the table and check the light doesn’t dazzle you before the cable gets cut to length.
What does lamp installation cost?
The price depends on the time. We charge 579 DKK an hour incl. VAT plus a 399 DKK start fee, which covers transport, hooks and small materials. In one hour we can usually fit several lamps or fit in other small jobs.
See all prices. While we’re there, we can also hang pictures or assemble furniture.
